I grew up in Billings, Montana (USA), and before coming to Japan I lived in Seoul, Korea, for around 12 years or so. I have mostly been an English teacher, and before that I was a  linguist/translator in the US Army for 5 years. I have studied Korean for about 20 years, and Japanese for 3 years.

Q2-Why did you move to Hannan?

When applying to the JET program, I asked to be placed in Osaka, since I have always felt that people from Osaka were very kind and friendly when I had visited in the past. Kansai is my favorite part of Japan, and I wanted to live in Osaka mainly due to the friendly people, and the interesting dialect.

Q3-What’s your impression of Hannan?(It doesn’t have to be positive)

Of course, the nature is beautiful, especially the sea, but the thing that impressed me the most was the kindness and friendliness of the people. It has only been a short while since I’ve started living here, so I sometimes feel a little lonely, but the nurses in the hospitals, the dentists, the store clerks etc. that I had often visited for help were all very nice and kind people.  Even when I went to the hospital in an emergency,everyone tried to help me. We even exchanged papers with vocab written in both English and Japanese so as to learn from each other. And all of the teachers at my schools have been very kind and helpful, too, and they continue to help me every day.The children in Hannan are very smart and have a good level of English. It makes me
happy to see them enjoying the classes.

もちろん自然も美しいですが（特に海が素晴らしいです）、私は人の優しさとフレンドリーさに魅力を感じます。住み始めて間もないため、少し寂しく感じる時もありますが、よく行く病院や歯医者の先生、看護師の皆さん、よく行くお店の店員の方々はとても良い人達で優しいです。緊急で病院に行った時も皆さん助けようとしてくれました。今では英語と日本語で書いた紙を交換して、お互い勉強したりします。また学校の先生たちもとても優しく、毎日私を助けようとしてくれます。阪南市の子ども達は賢く英語のレベルも高いです。そんな英語のクラスを教えることはとても楽しく、見ていて嬉しい気持ちになります。

Q4-What’s your favorite spot in Hannan?

I think the ocean is probably my favorite place so far, as it can be quite peaceful listening to the waves.

Q5-Please mention any concerns you had about moving to Hannan city.

I was mostly concerned about the language barrier, as my level of Japanese is still quite low. Many normal/everyday things are still difficult, but people I have met have been very helpful and patient with me so far.
